Cape Town Fires, March 2015

A fire which started in Muizenburg in the first week of March, spread throughout the Cape Peninsula, burning for more than a week. The fire destroyed thousands of hectares, taking one life, 13 houses, and forced the evacuation of some 500 residents.

I managed to join firefighters, farm workers and volunteers to capture moments of bravery at both Groot and Klein Constantia Wine Estates. The below pictures serve as a memory of the hard work and dedication members of the firefighting services and the Cape Town community showed during the blaze. We solute you all!

Fire with the Drakenstein Fire & Security Volunteer Group

I spent the afternoon documenting the Drakenstein Volunteer group in Paarl. With local fire services occupied on the mountain, it was incredible to see the perserverance of the men who were poorly equiped with small hoses, two tractors and the odd water bottle here and there.

Scorching temperatures and gusty winds resulted in the fire engulfing much of the vegetation. The Drakenstein Group is an NPO and rely on donations.
