Pulled from my Archives, this image sends me straight back to my experiences working in Samora Machel Informal Settlement. A close knit community plagued by crime and poverty, somehow resonated an overwhelming promise of hope and growth. I spent most of my time with the elders, watching them knit and eat bobotie as they passed around what seemed to me as jokes about the 'White Boy with the camera' in Xhosa. Everyone welcomed me with warmth and showed the utmost gratitude for the photos I would take of them, even though some were not impressed with the additional '10 years' the camera would put on. I am grateful for my time in this community, I eagerly await my return.
